People have that inaccurate notion that a person would go to a psychologist so that psychological counselling can cure them of their mental disorder. They believe that psychologists are heroes who will provide them of the solution to their problems. But in reality, it is really about unfolding the potentials of an individual. Making them realizes who and what they can become. It’s not just talking about the depression, anger, and anxiety. Not just about analyzing the bits and pieces of a patient's story. It’s about making them the hero of their story.
In humanistic psychology, it emphasizes on understanding the nature of a person as a whole. It is about empathy and putting oneself in the other person's shoe. In performing psychological counselling, it is important that a psychologist must be non-judgemental. They have the ability to observe in the eyes of the one behaving. At some point, they may encounter people with exceptional hardship and difficulties. Psychologists would need to undergo clinical supervision as well, to be able to define who they are and their profession, and maintain that boundary.
Role of a Counselling Psychologist
A counselling psychologist is meant to challenge an individual to find their own path, to support them, guide them through the process of development. It is crucial that an individual must learn and realize the solution to their own problem so they would not be seeking for help everytime they face a difficulty.Psychological Counselling may be done individually or in groups. Schizophrenia, bipolar, borderline personality disorder, and other types of mental issues can be consulted to a counselling psychologist.
Counselling Psychologist must take a Doctorate in Counselling, it is a legally protected title. But they are not medical doctors so unlike the psychiatrist, they cannot prescribe medication unless permitted by the government and if they have studied psychopharmacology.
